1. Am I a suitable candidate for FTMC doctoral studies?

A candidate for doctoral studies must hold a Master’s degree or an equivalent higher education qualification in physics, chemistry, or a related field.

It is also very important to evaluate the following aspects:

  1. academic achievements and preparation in the chosen field;
  2. interest in the doctoral topic and motivation to conduct research;
  3. scientific or practical experience (thesis work, publications, conferences, projects);
  4. ability to work independently, think critically, and solve complex problems.

2. Can international candidates apply for FTMC doctoral studies?

Yes, candidates from all over the world can apply. Applicants must meet general admission requirements – hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field and submit all required documents.

FTMC aims to create a supportive and motivating academic environment for all doctoral students. Currently, about 30% of FTMC PhD students are international.

3. How to choose a doctoral topic and supervisor?

When selecting a doctoral topic, it is recommended to evaluate your academic background, competencies, and research interests. FTMC offers topics in physics, chemistry, and materials engineering.

After reviewing available topics, applicants must fill out a candidate form (provided with each topic). Based on the submitted information, supervisors select candidates and contact them.

It is also recommended to consider the supervisor’s research areas, publications, ongoing projects, and available research infrastructure.

4. Can I propose my own research topic?

No. Doctoral topics and supervisors are approved annually by joint committees of Vilnius University in physics, chemistry, and materials engineering.

Candidates must choose from the officially approved list of topics based on their interests and preparation.

5. How are doctoral studies organized?

Doctoral studies at FTMC focus on high-level research in physics, chemistry, and materials engineering.

Doctoral students work in international research groups and contribute to new knowledge, innovation, and technological development.

Studies include:

  • Study component (30 ECTS): 3–4 specialized courses and transferable skills development;
  • Research activities:
  1. presentation of results at least at two international conferences;
  2. publication of at least two scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals;
  3. research internship (recommended duration: at least 3 months);
  • Preparation and defense of the dissertation.

Studies are based on independent work, collaboration with the supervisor, and active participation in the international scientific community.

6. Are FTMC doctoral studies paid? What financial support is provided?

Doctoral studies are free of charge for state-funded positions.

Doctoral students receive a state stipend (subject to change):

  1. Year 1 – 1406 EUR/month;
  2. Years 2–4 – 1628 EUR/month.

The stipend is paid throughout the study period if study requirements are fulfilled.

Additional funding is available for research and studies (conferences, internships, publications, etc.). Students may also participate in research projects and be employed.

7. Do doctoral students have employment opportunities at FTMC?

Yes. Doctoral students can participate in research projects and be employed, gaining practical experience and additional income.

8. What determines success in doctoral admission?

Admission is competitive and based on:

  1. academic performance (GPA);
  2. motivation interview;
  3. research experience and achievements.

The motivation interview is mandatory, with a minimum score of 6. Candidates scoring below this are not considered further.

Strong academic preparation, clear motivation, and research experience are key to success.

9. How to apply?

Recommended steps:

  1. Choose a topic. Review available topics and select one matching your interests.
  1. Fill in the application form. Provide information about your education, experience, and motivation.
  1. Wait for supervisor decision. Selected candidates are invited for further interviews.
  1. Submit official application. Provide required documents (diplomas, CV, recommendations, etc.).
  1. Attend motivation interview. Your motivation and readiness are evaluated.
  1. Final selection. Decision is made based on all criteria.

10. Do international students need a visa or residence permit?

Requirements depend on citizenship.

  1. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens do not need a visa but must register their stay if longer than 3 months.
  2. Non-EU/EEA citizens usually need a national (D) visa or a temporary residence permit before or shortly after arrival.
  3. Admitted candidates receive official documents required for visa/residence applications. Detailed information is provided by the Lithuanian Migration Department.

It is recommended to apply as early as possible due to varying processing times.
