Life as a PhD Student
A PhD is about more than research. It is about community, collaboration, and the opportunity to grow alongside researchers and doctoral candidates from diverse scientific disciplines.
At FTMC, PhD students work in modern laboratories, participate in international research projects, present their findings at conferences, and become active members of a vibrant academic community.
Everyday Life of a PhD Student
- Research in the Laboratory. Conducting experiments, performing measurements, analyzing data, and developing new research methods.
- Research Projects. Taking part in national and international scientific research projects.
- Seminars and Discussions. Attending regular seminars and research presentations with fellow researchers and colleagues.
- Conferences and Research Visits. Opportunities to participate in international conferences and collaborate with research partners abroad.
- Informal PhD Student Activities. PhD students actively organize game nights, academic afternoons, hiking trips, and other informal events that help strengthen the community and foster meaningful connections.
Mentorship
During the first year of studies, each PhD student is assigned a mentor from among senior doctoral candidates who can provide guidance on both practical and academic matters.
In addition, students may seek support from academic mentors, FTMC researchers who offer advice on:
- Research directions and scientific publications
- Conferences and international opportunities
- Professional development and career growth
The mentorship programme encourages open communication and provides support throughout both the academic and practical aspects of doctoral studies.
PhD Student Community

International Environment
FTMC’s doctoral studies are truly international, bringing together researchers and PhD students from a wide range of countries and backgrounds.
Academic and scientific communication is conducted in English, allowing international doctoral candidates to fully engage in their studies and research activities from day one.
FTMC is committed to creating an open and inclusive environment that promotes collaboration, the exchange of ideas, and international mobility.
FizTeCh Conference
The FizTeCh Conference is an annual gathering of FTMC PhD students and early-career researchers, providing a platform to present the latest research results and exchange ideas.
The conference offers opportunities to:
- Present research to the academic community
- Receive valuable feedback from experienced researchers and peers
- Build connections with PhD students and young scientists from different fields of research
More than just a venue for presenting research, the conference is an integral part of doctoral life, helping participants develop as researchers and expand their professional networks.
