About the Studies
What is FTMC PhD studies?
FTMC PhD studies offer the opportunity to develop the technologies of the future together with one of the strongest research communities in the Baltic region. These are third-cycle studies aimed at training highly qualified scientists and researchers. During their studies, doctoral candidates independently conduct research, generate new knowledge, and address complex scientific and technological challenges.
Upon completion of the doctoral programme and the award of a Doctor of Science degree, FTMC graduates become highly qualified researchers and innovators who:

Possess advanced expertise in their field as well as interdisciplinary knowledge
Independently initiate, plan and implement research and experimental development projects
Apply modern research methodologies and develop innovative technological solutions
Actively contribute to scientific progress, technological advancement, and the development of practical solutions for business and society
Generate new ideas and successfully implement them within science, higher education, and high-technology sectors
Study Subjects
The Centre for Physical Sciences and Technology conducts PhD studies in cooperation with Vilnius University. The studies are organised in the following fields of science:

Physics (N002) – field of natural sciences

Chemistry (N003) – field of natural sciences
-
Materials Engineering (T008) – field of technological sciences
Doctoral candidates take elective subjects in accordance with their research topic. Detailed descriptions of the study programmes are available on the Vilnius University website – please select the field of interest and review the programme content.
Funding
Doctoral candidates studying in state-funded places are awarded a doctoral scholarship:

First year: 1,406 EUR per month
-
Second and subsequent years: 1,628 EUR per month
The amount of the scholarship is calculated on the basis of the Basic Social Benefit (BSI), which as of 1 January 2026 is set at 74 EUR. The amount of the doctoral scholarship is determined by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania.
How do studies take place at FTMC?
PhD studies at FTMC are based on independent research carried out in accordance with an individual study plan prepared together with the academic supervisor.
The structure of the studies includes:

scientific research;

preparation of publications;

writing of the doctoral thesis;

research placements (internships);
-
study subjects within the chosen field;

development of innovation and entrepreneurship competences.
