Lithuania-Poland Workshop on Physics and Technology

The year of 2019, involving an important date – the 450th Anniversary of the Union of Lublin – encouraged us to organize a scientific workshop of our neighbouring countries.

The event intends not only to broaden frontiers of the scientific cooperation but it is up to enrich topics of project applications and to open new dimensions in confluence of expertise. It aims also to find more items which will unite, but not separate us; which will stimulate us solving problems and not aggravating them, which will enrich and complement us uplifting our neighbourhood.

On September 26th, the official opening ceremony took place at the majestic Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. The participants were welcomed by FTMC director prof. Gintaras Valušis, Polish Ambassador to Lithuania Urszula Doroszewska and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania Neris Germanas.

“I am glad that scientific cooperation between Poland and Lithuania is expanding. And I hope that the contacts between the Lithuanian and Polish academic communities during this conference will not only be a clear incentive for the exchange of new ideas, but will also create opportunities for joint research projects,” said Polish Ambassador to Lithuania U. Doroszewska.

“Poland is one of the countries with which we strive to establish active and immediate scientific cooperation links, to work together in developing science, technology and innovation. So we welcome the willingness and efforts of both states to strengthen, maintain close neighbourly relations, and develop scientific, political and cultural interconnections,” said N. Germanas.

Prof. G. Valušis emphasized that Polish and Lithuanian scientists-physicists always had personal collegial contacts, worked on joint projects and constantly shared their scientific experience.

“Scientists working on joint physics and technology development projects create a new space for synergies. Intensive scientific cooperation between us and our Polish colleagues opens up new opportunities both for joint scientific applications to the European Commission and for the creation and development of high value-added products or scientific services internationally,” said prof. G. Valušis.

Dean of the Faculty of History, Vilnius University (VU) prof. Rimvydas Petrauskas shared insights on the significance of the Lublin Union for the Lithuanian and Polish states in the past and in the modern historical context.

The historical discourse of the conference was extended by a piano music concert that delighted guests and participants. Pianist Austėja Valušytė performed music by Polish and Lithuanian composers F. Chopin, S. Vainiūnas, M. K. Ciurlionis and G. Bacewicz. After a short excursion to the Palace, a memorable opening was captured in joint photo in front of the canvas by Jan Mateika called "Union of Lublin".

On the first day of the event, scientists Vidmantas Gulbinas, Adam Babiński, Beata Luszczynska, Irmantas Kasalynas, Wlodzimierz Lewandowski, Genrik Mord, Linas Vilčiauskas, Marcin Szalkowski, Ramūnas Aleksiejūnas, Justyna Grzelak shared their scientific insights.

The second day of the conference took place at the Center of Physical Sciences and Technology (Saulėtekio av. 3, Vilnius). The presentations were delivered by Voitech Stankevich, Bozena Sikora, Janusz Sadowski, Darius Abramavičius, Tomas Kazimierczuk, Evaldas Naujalis, Jacek Szczytko, Mantas Marčinskas, Agnieszka Siemion, Ernestas Kasparavičius, Maksim Dub, Mažena Mackoit-Sinkevičienė.
